Youth Speak Out at Rock Eisteddfod 2009 – “Everything is Okay,” Really?

Youth Speak Out at Rock Eisteddfod 2009 – “Everything is Okay,” Really?

What do war, social climbing, the world financial crisis, depression, Fascist oppression, choices in life, and genetically modified foods all have in common? They are the collective concerns of the most current generation of youth; not so much drugs, sex, or Swine Flu.

All themes selected at the Western Australian Schools Rock Eisteddfod Challenge and J Rock 2009 had strong moral overtones together with subtle ethical nuances filtering through–the issue underpinning triple-bottom-line[1] outcomes. I found this encouraging as we’re so quick to think the world is in rapid moral ‘sinkhole’ decline.

Judging on this event, our world is in healthy hands venturing into the next generation; but our youth still look to us for hope, security and direction, without being inordinately hampered and constrained (by us) so they’re able to contribute openly, freely, vivaciously.

And let us not be lulled into thinking kids today don’t care for history; two of the eight acts were set in the 1940’s World War II genre.

Judges Too Are Judged

It wasn’t only the performers themselves who felt the strain of the acid-test, but the judges too showed marks of nervousness, as they creatively tiptoed through their synopses. Pressure in the moment of the spotlight reveals our character more than any other ordinary thing.

Perhaps with eyes to judge like they do in Dancing with the Stars each judge showed the discerning just how human they really are. That was both refreshing and uninspiring, depending on the viewpoint. All who perform feel the heat; it’s the ultimate test of competence.

Not Everyone Can Be Called ‘Winner’

It’s a cruel trick of life to compete, allowing fanciful thoughts of crowning glory, only to end up an also-ran. It’s not until we compete (in anything in life) that we realise how very big the pack actually is–it’s a big world.

It’s a reality every one of us has tasted and will taste again. There’s nothing more typical and ordinary than a polished placegetter without the winner’s trophy. And such little separates each of them, but this ‘little’ is supremely significant.

“No Happy Endings” i.e. end result, Depression

My wife spotted this obvious-in-hindsight overall premise; there weren’t many happy endings. Our youth are so concerned with adult-world issues that it is easy to see them living with little real hope. Perhaps they can’t see hope ahead for all the dire poisoned issues mentioned earlier.

In this way we forget how burdened our youth really are–and these are the ones with a voice, for many are invisible. One banner facetiously insisted that “Everything is Okay.” That’s a sad, numbed and ignorant state of being that the youth actually detest. They fervently seek truth, as youth always have. As my pastor tells me, young people can smell insincerity and lies a mile off.

Real world issues continue to frighten youth. They’re faced with prospect of taking up the toxic chalice. All youth are affected by the devastating themes presented, and more. There’s little wonder that 1 in 5 youth are depressed.

This event was a unique, unembellished window into the youth psyche.

The more things change, the more things stay the same.

We must somehow identify with the sense of daunting reality represented by our youth, getting them used to life skill and resilience techniques which only faith can truly help with.

It is said (and seen here) the youth strongly identify with the moral world; it is our task, in the adult world, to position faith as an attractive option empowering the possessor toward life, and that abundant–making faith a relevant response to moralistic issues, which it is.

It’s the only effective counter-argument to the depressed reality of living life in this world.

Hard work, discipline, determination, in addition to coaching football fundamentals is what produces winning football teams and successful youth football players.

Below are some of the skills needed to become a good football coach, and you can find the football drills needed to run a practice properly in books or online from others football coaches at free websites like

Youth Football Coaching Skills

Be A Good Role Model – youth football players are an observant bunch. They imitate their role models whether on or off the field. It is the football coach’s responsibility to display the character that they want to see in their players. Character traits such as consistency, emotional control, honesty, and integrity are important.

Teach Football Fundamentals – practice to the players strengths and determine where they are weak. Pay particular attention to teaching football skills such as stance and footwork when players are performing youth football drills. Be sure you’re your players are focusing on all aspects of the drill and do not become sloppy in any area.

Use Creative Football Plays In Practice – like most children, youth football players need variety in their practices. Vary the practice schedule from day to day to keep them interested and continually learning. Keep the football drills short enough that players don’t lose interest and concentration.

Use Constructive Feedback – too many youth coaches “channel” football coaches they see in the movies. They believe that coaching football drills involves acting like a drill sergeant. While this attitude can have its place in the coach’s arsenal, it should not be the sole motivator. Teach them. Explain the who, what, where, why, and how of the football drill. You’ll end up with more intelligent youth football players.

Be Positive – youth football coaches must look to the positive aspects of the situation. Negative emotions bring negative results. The kids are going to be making mistakes throughout their lives. It’s important for a youth football coach to teach them how to overcome mistakes and even to capitalize on them. A successful and well coached football team masters the fundamentals, handles adversity, and brings home the championship due to the team’s attitude. Positive expectations will most likely bring positive results.

By Trevor Sumner who works for, a youth football community dedicated to providing parents coaches and athletes the tools and information to celebrate the love of the game. has one of the most comprehensive, free football drill libraries in its active football community.

Foster Youth

Foster Youth

Foster youth experience higher than normal rates of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), deficits in executive functioning, anxiety, incarceration, poverty, homelessness, eating disorders, obesity, and suicide.
Many of these youth are influenced by extreme negativity to include emotional neglect, poor nutrition, exposure to violence, and child abuse. These negative influences may have lifelong repercussions and affect their physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being. When children experience trauma as the direct result of an abusive caregiver, the process of developing a secure and healthy attachment is severely disturbed.

Foster youth may arrive at their new foster homes with a myriad of issues to include enuresis, encopresis, injury, past abuse, fear of being alone, fear of strangers, fear of being abducted, parents not loving them, etc It is important to be sensitive to their many fears, as they are very real. It is also important not to insist on them sharing the past with you. While being open to frank conversation is positive, insisting they re-hash their past can be detrimental to their rehabilitation. Leave this to the professionals.

Foster youth may have difficulty transitioning into their new home environment. It is not uncommon for them to experience a six month transitional period. Certain negative behaviors that occur initially generally subside after this transition period. Being aware that certain events may trigger negative emotions within these youth is important. Their birthday, for example, may remind them of other birthdays they have had and of their biological parents. They may become melancholy on or around mothers and fathers day because they are reminded of their biological family. Entering a new school is rough for almost anyone, but especially for these youth, as it is not uncommon for them to experience multiple placements and schools.

They may be removed from everything familiar to them to include their neighborhood, town, county, state, friends, school, family, etc Adjusting to a totally new life is shocking and difficult. Even though these youth are removed from their biological families for good reasons, they still grieve the loss of the familiar, their family, friends, pets, and siblings.

While foster homes are generally superior placements compared to their natural environment, they experience a very real loss. They may experience confusion and anger focused on the reasons why they cant be placed with extended family members.
Sadly, almost half of the foster youth in the United States face homelessness by the age of 18. Many of these youth leave the system without a permanent or stable family environment. They also have higher mortality rates due to substance abuse, accidents, suicide, and various chronic illnesses. The probability of these youth dropping out of school before they graduate is nearly 80 percent. Generally, less than two percent of this population earns a bachelors degree.
It is important that anyone working with this very sensitive population remember they are experiencing significant grief, abandonment, anger, and depression. Being a child is difficult enough when life is considered normal and healthy. These youth have an intensely compounded situation sometimes made worse by multiple placements and/or being placed with foster parents not equipped to deal with these significant issues. These children need to consistently feel the caring presence of their caregiver.

It is important that caregivers validate their feelings and remember that grief is normal. Avoiding criticism, ridicule, and shame is an important part of the healing process. Foster youth will experience healing slowly, as they are ready to delve into recovery. It is equally important to ensure the youth maintain regular visits with a trusted mental health professional.
Foster youth require and deserve an immeasurable amount of support to overcome the obstacles they have endured. There are a myriad of ways to support foster youth. Support may be provided in the form of monetary donations to foster agencies; it may come in the form of volunteering to be a foster parent; it may come in the form of advocating and lobbying for the rights of foster youth; and may come in the form of dedicating your life to working with this delicate and deserving population.

A Broad View About Youth Relationships

A Broad View About Youth Relationships

Do you know the rough truth about young adult relationships? It’s a fact that the dominant number of youngsters nowadays feel confused and uncertain about an actual, lasting relationship. This makes many people think of a downtrend in the youth’s values and belief in a bright life. However, it will be fair if we view about a generation’s attitude with regard of its roots, the social economic changes.

Some individuals say that it is so difficult that they have become ambivalent about relationships. Others say that singlehood may be the way to go. Yet the majority of young adults expect that a partner will appear in their lives at about age thirty–when they are ready for it. Until then, the world “commitment” is often not in their vocabulary.

These modern love behaviors really have little to do with a generational change in values. Rather, they reflect the social-economic revolution that is going on worldwide. In that context, young adult behaviors are understandable. But you have to get out and talk to a lot of young adults to fully appreciate what is going on.

In interviews across the U.S., young adults told me that there were seven things that made romantic relationships difficult and confusing for them:

Society is Changing. Things are evolving so fast that the guidelines for romance that you saw in operation when you grew up do not work very well when you reach adulthood.
Adult Statuses are Hard to Obtain. In today’s economy, making money and getting the full responsibilities of adulthood do not come easy. That is why individuals cannot commit to a relationship in the same time frame that their parents did.
Female Economic Liberation. Young women often seek economic liberation rather than a husband. These young women are simply not willing to settle for a man who does not meet their expectations.
Changing Demographics. There is a large segment of the population that is single. This makes it seem like there is some sort of liberating power in singlehood. Many young adults give this as a reason to put off serious relationships and marriage.
Self Fulfillment. Seeking self-fulfillment stands in competition with serious long-term relationships. Young adults want to get out and discover the world and how they fit in it before they think about settling down.
Lack of Male Role Models. Young men are not all that sure of what role they are supposed to play in today’s relationship environment. They face changing expectations from their friends, families, and female partners. Some say their fathers live in a different world and cannot offer much in the way of targeted emotional support. In response to this situation, many young adult men move cautiously when starting serious, long-term relationships.
Mobilization of Relationships. In the modern world, people are on the go and so are their relationships. Both partners move at the same time while texting or calling on their cells. This takes place in the context of a digital, online social world. At the confluence of all this activity, friends often act as coaches in each-other’s relationships and group activities often replaces dating. This new cultural reality has put the brakes on the rush to marry someone who is not your friend and whom you do not really know.

When taken together, these issues make it difficult for young men and women to have serious long-term relationships. Yet they do not report feeling defeated or remorseful. Rather, they see opportunity. A majority of men and women say they are working on improving their intimate communication skills and earnest self-assertion. They have to work hard at communicating because they never know what to expect next in today’s constantly-changing world.

As we look at the future of modern love, nobody really knows what lies ahead for young adult relationships. Society will continue to change and so will their behaviors. That will be okay for those young adults who keep an open mind and strive to learn new communication skills. When individuals do these things, their relationships will be as meaningful and exciting as they care to make them.
